MobileMe for the iPhone, finally!

Posted By JenBrett on Nov 30, 2008 at 11:50AM

So apparently I've been complaining for a month and there was an app out there, silly me. This app came out in October, Apple should have told us :)

MobileFiles app is free and allows you to open all the files saved on your iDisk. My $100 a year is finally worth it.

You can also download the files to your iPhone. Now if only Mail would let me attach files.

Come on Steve, I know you don't want it to be a PDA, but let's face it, you're just postponing the inevitable.

Favorite Apps - Update

Posted By JenBrett on Nov 29, 2008 at 2:24PM

I've clearly had too much downtime over the Thanksgiving holiday. Here's the Apps I've been loving:

ACTPrinter: $0.99 - While I'm still waiting for the attachment function for iPhone mail, being able to keeps PDFs and Docs on my iPhone is a step in the right direction. note: you will need to go to the main web page and download the printer. Once you've downloaded it, you need to keep it, don't delete the download. I moved mine to the Apps folder.

Plusmo College and Pro Football: free! Extremely detailed and updates every 30 seconds.

Moop: $0.99 - I bought it just for the "ba-dump-ching" sound effect. My beau has awful jokes :)

Flip: free - beam contact info to other iPhones. iBeam is $0.99 and works with BB and Treo, but who needs those ;)

Y'all found any nifty new apps?

Apple Recalls 3G USB Power Adapter

Posted By JenBrett on Sep 24, 2008 at 9:09AM

Seems the prongs have broken off and remained lodged in the power outlets. Geeze, those people must have yanked them out. Still, better safe than sorry, here's the info.

Personalizing my iPhone Ringtones

Posted By JenBrett on Sep 18, 2008 at 8:07AM

The first thing I've done since I got my first phone with downloadable ring tones was give custom tones to the important people in my life.

One thing I loved about the Palm Treo was that I could use any MP3 I had loaded on the phone as a ring tone. So having to make my own for the iPhone left my short attention span crying. I managed to sit down long enough to make 1 custom ring for the phone in general.

This past weekend, in between football games, I managed to make tones for all the important people in my life. It's super easy:

1. Open a New Project in Garage Band
2. Delete the default track
3. Drag a song from iTunes to the Garage Band window
4. Choose to Send to iTunes as a Ringtone
5. It's gonna tell you the file is too big, click OK
6. Drag the small yellow bar that appeared over the track to the section of the song you want for the ring tone
7. You can make the bar larger, making the ringtone longer
8. Once you've selected your section, Send to iTunes as ringtone again
9. In iTunes be sure your iPhone is set to sync the Ringtones Playlist

Here's my Playlist:

Default: Jessica - Allman Brothers
Mom: Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
Dad: One Day - Hans Zimmer (Pirates: Worlds End)
Work: Darlington County - Bruce Springstein
Haley (my fav Hookie fan): Enter Sandman - Metalica
Kiki (my fav theatre actress): Super Trooper - Mamma Mia OST
Leigh (my BFF): When It All Falls Apart - Veronicas

What are your fav ringtones?

Perfect case ... nearly $100 later

Posted By JenBrett on Sep 11, 2008 at 5:39PM

So Day 1 of my iPhone 3G life I purchased a black rubber Jam Jacket case, about $20 and the only thing out.

It stretched out of shape, covered the buttons and was less than the final option. Not a big deal, it was just the starter case.

After seeing the NuForm on GeekSugar, I immediatly ordered the gray one. $25 wasn't a big deal, with shipping it was about $35. When it arrived I was in love, so snug and pretty and thin!

Now I'm not gonna pretend I'm easy on my phones, even the 3G. I take them to the beach, bury them in my huge purse and in this case gently tossed it onto my bed. It slid off my bed and onto the carpet, barely tapped the dresser and the top left corner cracked. I managed to superglue the crack but the damage was done. The case no longer fit as snugly as it had. There was no ridge where the 2 pieces met and holding the phone by it's side and pushing the sleep button caused it to slide out of the case.

Here's where it gets bad and I am a horrible phone mom. During the "hurricane" Hannah that came to Wilmington, NC we did as we usually do and had a party. At the party a friend and I decided to have a light saber fight. "Hold it upside down so the speaker faces out" he said. One wave of my hand and the phone slide ass first out of the case and landed on the concrete so hard I'm actually impressed it still works. There's knicks and scrapes on it, but it still works. I'd had it!

I came to Cary for the week to visit the family and made my way to the Apple Store at Crabtree Mall where I proceeded to open every case and test the durability. I also warned several 3G buddies against the slide case. Finally I found it, my holy grail of 3G cases, the one I'd always been looking for. Only $30! My new love is the Contour Design HardSkin.

Now I know it looks bulky, the picture is totally decieving. It's thin, hard, rubberized and is made up of a front and back that snap together. It's the same kind of case I had on my Treo 680, and I can tell you, that phone took a beating. There is an opening the width of the speakers on the bottom and comes with rubber covers for the buttons, I took the covers off.

If only they'd had this in July, my 3G wouldn't have so many battle wounds. No worries, it's safe now.

Invisible Shield for iPhone 3G

Posted By millarci on Sep 10, 2008 at 6:49PM

What are everyone thoughts about the Invisible Shield? So far I've only heard good things about it. Anyone have anything bad to say about it? Anyone have more good things to say about it? My plan was to put it on my iPhone 3G and then put the Agent 18 shield on it.

Any thoughts?

IFrogz iPhone 3G Luxe Case

Posted By macgirl on Sep 10, 2008 at 3:22PM

On September 2nd we got our full shipment of iFrogz cases, one in each color. The first thing I noticed is that the colors are WAY off of what they show on the website. Since we had the Red one previously I had a feeling what most of them would look like but a few were still a surprise. The pink is just as bad as I thought it might be and the clear turns out to be really clear and not metallic at all like the site makes it appear. While I liked the green more than I thought I would I ended up choosing the Blue case.

Some people have complained that their cases have done more harm than good as when they remove them they find that their iPhone has been scratched underneath. Usually the cause of that is dirt getting in the case and it being able to move around. This case is SUPER snug and has a little fuzzy sticker along the back side. I felt like it really didn't move on my phone at all. While I have only had it on a bit over a week I just removed the case and don't really seem to notice any marring on my chrome face place (previous cases on my first gen iPhone left some scratches).

Things I do notice:
My husband's iPhone has been in the iFrogz case a week longer than mine. His iPhone took an amazing digger the same day he put the case on and it scratched off the color on the places it hit. In iFrogz defense it would have put huge divots in the iPhone so I can't fault it for taking some damage. I just noticed on his that it has some metallic skin peeling up. I pointed it out to him and he thought it had to do with the fall. I noticed on mine today that I have a very small spot on the front edge where the metallic matte skin looks like it rubbed away as it is shiny. I haven't dropped mine and it really hasn't had any more wear or tear than it would have in the nude.

Final thoughts:
I like this case and plan to continue to use it. For $20 it protects my precious gadget just fine and I like the fact that I am not just another white iPhone in the crowd. I wish that the plastic used was more than just a paint job with a metallic matte coating as that would make it a bit more durable and less likely to show signs of wear.

Apps I can't live without

Posted By JenBrett on Sep 9, 2008 at 9:40AM

As if not having to memorize someones phone number or directions to get places isn't enough, I've found a few apps that make other aspects of my life far easier, and most of them are free!

Facebook/Myspace - cause clearly social networking in an addiction

Where - find Starbucks and cheap gas!

Zipcodes - it's handy and international

iScopes - gotta see what the universe has in store for me each day

myLite - helps me search thru my purse in the dark and the lighter is just too awesome

PhoneSaber - b/c every geek needs a little Star Wars on their phone

Games I love: Jawbreaker, Teto Teto!, Sol Free, Sudoku

So what are your favs?

I'm a recent convert, I used to have a Palm Treo 680. Some days I wonder how I ever got along w/o it. So I'm here to spread the love and share my addiction.

So post your favorite Apps, functions, accessories, even any technical issues you're having.

Remember, the first step is admitting you have a problem :)
